Proper Mowing! The art of the cut!
Are you ready to lay down those stripes?
Yes, there is a proper way to mow your grass BUT don’t stress out — we are here to help. Mowing your lawn properly will produce the happiest, healthiest lawn in town. No pressure here!
A properly mowed lawn will not only help maintain the health and stunning look of your lawn; it will make it difficult for weeds to grow in.
Follow these tips, and then sit back and enjoy.

- Your first mowing should be at 1.5 inches in height (approximately). In the weeks following, raise your mower one notch at a time until you reach a mowing height between 2.5 and 3 inches. This length helps shade your roots and provides more leaf surface for your lawn so that it can make its own food. The proper height also helps your lawn retain its moisture during the warmer summer months.
- As a general rule, you should never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade in a single cutting.
- Be kind to your grass and sharpen your mower blade regularly. This helps avoid “tearing” of the grass blade (ouch) and makes your lawn less susceptible to disease.
- As the season winds down, start to reduce the height of your mower gradually so your last mowing is at a height of 1.5 inches once again. This will help to reduce any snow mold (Yep, it’s a thing!) your lawn may develop over the winter and help your lawn green up more quickly next spring.
